A safe roof for a mother and her five children

After her husband's death, a mother of five is raising her children under a roof that no longer keeps the rain out. We will rebuild it with her neighbors.

The story

Our team met this family during a home visit in Mukono. The father died last year, the mother sells vegetables at the roadside, and the six of them sleep in a two-room house whose grass roof lets in the rain every night of the wet season. The children are often ill, and the youngest has missed most of the school term.

A new iron-sheet roof, new timbers and a repaired wall will keep the house dry for many years. The mother's neighbors have offered the labor, and a local carpenter will lead the work. The appeal also covers a year of school fees for the two oldest children so the family can get back on its feet.

We organize family appeals like this one only with the family's agreement and only when a one-time intervention truly changes their situation. The mother chose the photos we may use and reviewed this story before it was published.
